It's so important to realize that everyone communicates differently.
Effective communication doesn't always come naturally for everyone but it is absolutely imperative for day to day success.
Patience is incredibly important as not everyone operates on the same timeline and may not have the same perspective.
Patience with guests is paramount, no matter how frustrating it can be sometimes. Lastly, don't let stress win. Life's too short to be stressed out all the time! Remember to relax, lead by example and stay humble.
Education should be constant through books, maps, podcasts and tastings.
All are meant to reinforce the most important aspect of a sommelier: service in the dining room. One of the best ways to educate yourself is by listening to what guests are asking for. Ask the right questions so that the guest gets exactly what they want. And once the trust is built, they'll be back for what is new and exciting on the list!
Karen McNeil's "The Wine Bible" was eye opening for me to the world of wine and beverage in general.
It's always the first book I recommend to anyone interested in a sommelier profession. Plus, it presents a wonderful foundation of knowledge upon which to build.
One of my oldest friends always said "just don't every make anyone mad, no matter what." Sounds so simple and obvious but, as it's such small world, you never know where our lives, paths and careers will take us.
If you never truly make anyone mad, you never develop enemies.
