Follow Through with Your 2019 Resolutions

A guide to staying balanced with life and work in the hospitality industry

With the beginning of the New Year, many of us feel the need to make changes and improvements to our lives. According to a YouGov survey, the main resolution categories that most people want to focus on are self-care, new skills, and a new job. Here are some ways to help you get a fresh start in 2019 and take the first steps to get those resolutions in motion.

Practice Self-Care

One of the quickest ways to burn out in this industry is to have an unhealthy work-life balance, which often includes neglecting your mental and physical health. If the business of serving others is leaving you feeling stressed, perhaps try some alternative ways to unwind after work that don't involve closing out your local bar.

Learn Something New

Learning new skills or hobbies is a great way to enrich your personal life as well as further your career. If English is your second language, consider improving how you communicate with your coworkers. Other industry-worthy skills to hone include the art of decreasing food costs and improving you beer and wine knowledge to heighten the guest experience and lay the foundation for your own growth.

Change Jobs

If you’re ready for a change, starting a new job may be just what you need. Job changes, despite the fear of the unknown (e.g., new challenges, obstacles, etc.), are great opportunities to advance your career and skillset. Take proactive steps to open up new doors for yourself and make sure you're prepped when those doors open, which will make moving to a new job a lot easier:

  • Let companies know that you want to work with them.
  • Update your Culinary Agents' profile with your recent work experience, education and special skills.
  • Set up Job Alerts, so you are among the first to know when the perfect opportunity becomes availalbe.
  • Draft an amazing introduction for yourself.
  • Properly prepare for your interview (or trail).

If you love your current team but would like to try something new, make sure you take time this year to set yourself up to climb the ladder of success

Whatever your resolutions are for 2019, we look forward to helping you reach them! If you have a different New Year's resolution in mind, email us to let us know, as we would love to see how we might help you achieve it.
