Advice from Ellen Yin

Quotes about career path, skills, and teamwork from an industry leader.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that success in hospitality is never about one person — it's about the team.
Listening, staying curious, and being dynamic are essential.
I look for people who are thoughtful, open-minded, and genuinely curious.
I’m drawn to individuals who take pride in their work, are humble enough to learn, and care deeply about collaboration.
In this industry, emotional intelligence is critical — knowing how to read people, de-escalate situations, and lead with compassion.
Operationally, having strong problem-solving skills and the ability to anticipate needs before they arise is invaluable.
I find inspiration in so many places:
in our city’s diverse food community, in the stories of entrepreneurs, in artists and makers outside of hospitality. I also draw a lot of creative energy from traveling—seeing how different cultures gather, eat, and celebrate.
I love "The Restaurant Manifesto" podcast—it really dives into the cultural side of hospitality.
I also follow Eater, Bon Appétit, The New York Times, Washington Post and our Philadelphia Inquirer to learn what restaurants nationwide are up to and what is important to the community. For business insights, I like Harvard Business Review. Locally, Eli Kulp’s Delicious City is a great resource for the Philly food scene.
Consistency matters just as much as creativity.
It's the small details, and the genuine care that build long-term trust with both guests and employees.
