Working in kitchens with Chefs and cooks you're reminded that you can never just walk in and start work after all the hard jobs are done.
You're always going to be doing prep work: moving 30 cases of wine, working on your list etc. You can't just show up.
Surround yourself with mentors - good people and people who are more talented than you that you can learn from.
There was a time in my career that I measured my success by the Court of Master Sommeliers.
It's a great way to be inspired to be better and motivated to stay current. At the end of the day though, if you're a sommelier working the floor, never lose sight of your most important responsibility - serving the guest.
My mentor is Master Sommelier Shane Bjornholm - Having total faith and believing in someone the way he did with me goes a long way.
It also went beyond a year long mentorship, he'll be a mentor for life and that's an incredible thing.
