Advice from Jonny Barr

Quotes about career path, skills, and teamwork from an industry leader.
Lead by example, always do the right thing.
You are not always right, even if you are in a place of leadership.
Take ownership of and learn from your mistakes. Nobody is perfect; have the humility to recognize that.
Since beginning my career in hospitality, I’ve strategically worked in every role possible at a restaurant to attain the knowledge and experience to understand as much of the business as possible and ultimately, become a better leader.
When hiring, I look to see if candidates have a passion for hospitality and are excited to learn.
If so, they can build their knowledge and skill set to successfully handle any role. I also highly value proactive individuals. Self-starters are invaluable.
Transferable skills that I value include being organized, efficient, proactive, and eager to learn/share their knowledge.
To keep my team motivated, I try to have an open-door policy and try to really listen to the wants and needs of my employees.
I try to ensure that employees are constantly learning and building upon their core competencies while challenging themselves in new areas.
I love taking care of guests.
There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing them smile.
I am inspired by the many chefs and hospitality professionals I have worked for and with over the years.
I am continually inspired by the guests, both new and returning, who I have had the honor to get to know and build long-lasting relationships with.
I feel like every day presents new challenges and it requires you to remain flexible and creative.
I try to expose myself to people who have varied interests and knowledge in areas unfamiliar to me. This allows me to think outside the box and face problems with a different perspective.
I can’t do my job without moleskin – hospitality professionals, particularly in restaurants, put in a lot of mileage on a daily basis!
Building Molti Amici has been the highlight of my career.
It would be impossible without the help and support from my family, friends, colleagues and advisors.
Mutual respect is essential.
I try to operate in the same manner and hold myself to the same standards I expect from my teammates.
I try to leave work at the door.
It’s imperative to disconnect and recharge to operate as effectively and productively as possible. I encourage my staff to do the same. I never want an employee to dread coming in for service or feel burned out. Happy employees and happy guests are what we strive for.
Cycling is something I find essential to give me peace of mind and mental clarity.
I always have better ideas and work more productively after I go for a ride.
I really like Guy Raz’s podcast “How I Built This.” I like the stories behind the successful entrepreneurs and innovators.
Additionally, I enjoy his interview style and his calming nature.
